Expert thoracic surgery

Dr. Jenifer Marks is our general thoracic surgeon, who brings our patients specialized training and experience in treating conditions of the lung and esophagus. Her uniquely concentrated focus on general thoracic surgery sets her apart from other surgeons who might also perform the same procedures, such as general surgeons or cardiac surgeons. Fellowship trained general thoracic surgeons have been shown to have improved outcomes compared to other specialties who may also perform procedures such as lobectomy or esophagectomy.

Our team offers treatment for lung cancer, esophageal cancer, chest wall tumors and other thoracic malignancies and benign pleural and esophageal conditions. We coordinate with a highly specialized team of surgeons, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists to make sure that your treatment plan that is best suited to you. Each patient is unique, so you will get the individualized care you need to help ensure the best possible outcomes for your unique diagnosis.

Our thoracic program can also offer minimally invasive thoracic surgery techniques for many benign thoracic conditions affecting the esophagus, such as achalasia, hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Our approach to thoracic surgery

Dr. Marks is highly experienced in advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques such as Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) resections for lung cancer and performs robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS). Minimally invasive surgery allows patients to have less pain, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker return to normal activities.

Although minimally invasive surgeries are available, sometimes open incisions must be used, but our team will review all possible options during each patient's office visit. From diagnosis to treatment and recovery, our team will guide you through every step of the process with detailed explanations of possible procedures for your specific needs.

Patients also have access to cutting-edge clinical trials for lung and esophageal cancer through our partnerships with the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center and the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute.

Because of her undivided focus on thoracic surgeries, Dr. Marks and her team produce excellent outcomes for their patients. Dr. Marks participates in The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) General Thoracic Surgery database, which measures national thoracic surgery outcomes. Her team consistently meets and exceeds the national quality benchmarks set by this organization.
